Seagulls are a constant resident of Yachats, but are especially active in spring when they build nests and hatch their young.
Starting in the spring of 2013, local seagulls decided to take over our neighborhood for a rookery.
Almost every house, both north and south from us, had a pair of nesting seagulls on it.
Seagulls mate for life and we named the ones next door Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Matilda.
We found it fun to watch their family of 3 young ones grow on the roof next to us... I even threw some bread to them.
Unfortunately, the local hawks and eagles also discovered the roof nests and many of the chicks never lived to join the flock.
That was 2013... in 2014 they came back... but this time it wasn't so cute.
Weeks before they began to build their nest, the male started to bang on our loft windows with his beak asking for food and attention.
He would start at 5:30 am and keep it up intermittently till dark.
Nothing would deter him... our cat in the window... a life size picture of an eagle... a douche with the hose... a nail strip...
Finally, a couple seasons later, he stopped. Perhaps the repeated loss of his chicks to hawks depressed his ardor.
